| This is the index page which is under preparation for the McShane Family History research. Over the coming months we will expand the information here and try to use it to provide a base for McShane's from Belfast and Northern Ireland. This is the first time I have used Dreamweaver to produce a web page and it will be a learning curve over the next few months.

One of the earliest occurances of the McShane name seems to have been in County Kerry, where McShane was granted lands by Strongbow when he invaded Ireland in 1172. In 1167 Dermod MacMorough, the King Of Leinster is said to have kidnapped Dearvorgil the wife of Tiernan O'Rourke. The King of Connacht, Roderick O'Connor sided with O'Rourke, invaded Leinster with the aid of King Henry II, and became the self-styled monarch of Ireland. After this military success Henry in 1171 sent Strongbow back to Ireland to enact his Papal Bull granting his countrymen sovereignty over Ireland. Following the battles that took place, such as one with the King of Meath, Henry II deposed the rebels, confiscated their lands and re-allocated these to the Strongbownian followers.
